Look after your tyres and they will look after you
It is very important to conduct regular health checks on your tyres, not just to ensure safety, but to also make sure they have the longest lifespan possible.
Around 14% of vehicles on the roads in the UK are currently driving with unsafe or illegal tyres. This could lead you to receiving 3 points on your licence and £2,500 fine per tyre, this is because of how incredibly dangerous it is to the driver, passengers and other road users. So read on in our little help guide to help you keep your tyres safe.
By law you are required to have a minimum of 1.6mm of tyre tread around the central three-quarters of the tyre. Even though that is the minimum tread needed we would recommend not letting get to that stage before you get new tyres as this can impact on your vehicle's stopping distance performance and general control.
Checking your tread depth is very easy, you can use a 20p coin (the outer rim of a 20p coin is exactly 1.6mm) so if it is visible when placed between the grooves of your tyre you are in fact driving with illegal tyres.
Your vehicle is assigned a specific tyre pressure to ensure optimum safety, handling and fuel economy. Both under and over inflation affect the performance of your vehicle, causing an imbalance in wear and potential damage to the internal construction. You can check your tyre pressure at most petrol stations or alternatively we can check it for you.
If you are never not sure about the safety of your tyres bring your car in to us at Challenger Autos and we can check them for you.
